Description

These soft, buttery Italian Christmas Cookies are the perfect holiday treat! Flavored with vanilla and almond extracts, and topped with a sweet powdered sugar glaze and festive sprinkles, these cookies are easy to make and fun to decorate with the whole family. Perfect for holiday gatherings, cookie exchanges, or just to enjoy with a cozy cup of coffee.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk
  • Sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla and almond extracts.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place 2 inches apart on the baking sheet. Gently flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are lightly golden. Let cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and milk to make the glaze. Dip the tops of cooled cookies into the glaze and decorate with sprinkles. Allow glaze to set before serving.

Notes

  • The dough can be chilled for 15-20 minutes if it feels too sticky to handle.
  • The glaze can be customized with food coloring to fit different holiday themes.
  • Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4 days or frozen (without glaze) for up to a month.
