- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk, at room temperature
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped green candy melts or green M&M’s (optional for St. Patrick’s Day theme)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease or line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth.
- Beat in vanilla extract, egg, and egg yolk until light and creamy.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Fold in the chocolate chips and green candy melts or M&M’s if using.
- Spread the dough evenly into the prepared pan and press down gently.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the edges are golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- Allow to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into bars.
Notes
- Make sure the butter is cooled slightly before mixing to prevent cooking the eggs.
- For best results, use room temperature ingredients.
- Store leftover bars in an airtight container at room temperature.
