- 2 cups orange juice
- 2 cups water
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 8 whole cloves
- 4 whole star anise
- 1/2 teaspoon whole allspice berries (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 vanilla bean, split (or 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey (optional, to taste)
- 1 orange, sliced
- 1 apple, sliced
Instructions
- Pour apple cider, orange juice, and water into a large pot.
- Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, allspice berries if using, freshly grated nutmeg, and split vanilla bean.
- Stir in orange slices and apple slices to the mixture.
- Bring contents to a gentle simmer over medium heat, avoiding a boil.
- Reduce heat to low and allow to simmer uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes for optimal flavor development.
- Taste and incorporate maple syrup or honey if additional sweetness is desired. Remove pot from heat.
- Strain punch to remove spices and fruit slices if preferred, or serve directly for a rustic effect.
- Pour into mugs and garnish with a fresh apple or orange slice if desired. Serve warm.
