Description

This Garlic Shrimp Gratin features plump shrimp coated in a creamy, garlicky white sauce, topped with a golden, crispy cheese crust. It’s a rich and indulgent dish that pairs perfectly with bread, pasta, or vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Garlic Shrimp:

  • 1 pound shrimp (peeled & deveined)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)
  • 1 tablespoon white wine or lemon juice

For the Creamy Sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional, for depth of flavor)

For the Topping:

  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon chopped parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat & Prep

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Lightly grease a baking dish or individual ramekins with butter.

Step 2: Sauté the Shrimp

  1. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat.
  2. Add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Toss in the shrimp, season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes, and cook for 1-2 minutes per side until just pink (they’ll finish cooking in the oven).
  4. Deglaze the pan with white wine or lemon juice, stir, then transfer the shrimp to the prepared baking dish.

Step 3: Make the Creamy Sauce

  1. In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter and whisk in flour to form a roux.
  2. Slowly add heavy cream and milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  3. Stir in parmesan, Dijon mustard, and nutmeg. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until thickened.
  4. Pour the sauce over the shrimp in the baking dish.

Step 4: Make the Crispy Topping

  1. In a bowl, mix panko breadcrumbs with melted butter until coated.
  2. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella, parmesan, and buttery panko evenly over the shrimp.

Step 5: Bake Until Golden

  1. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  2. For extra crispiness, broil for 1-2 minutes at the end.

Step 6: Serve & Enjoy!

  • Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot with crusty bread, pasta, or rice.

Notes

  • Use fresh shrimp for the best flavor, but frozen (thawed) shrimp works too.
  • For a lighter version, use half-and-half instead of heavy cream and reduce the cheese.
  • Want extra crunch? Double the panko topping!
  • Make it ahead: Assemble everything and refrigerate before baking.
